
Picking the Right IR Setup for Metal Curing
If you’re curing coatings on metal, you’ve probably realized it’s not just about turning on the heat. It’s a balancing act. You have to figure out how the metal actually takes in that energy and how fast you need your parts moving down the line. Usually, it comes down to three options: shortwave, medium-wave, or twin-tube.
Let’s talk wavelengths
Shortwave lamps are like a punch to the gut. They hit the surface with high intensity and get the substrate hot, fast. If your main goal is to get parts out the door as quickly as possible, this is the way to go. Medium-wave is a different story. It’s more of a slow soak. The energy penetrates deeper, which is a lifesaver for those thick coatings. It lets you cure the bottom layer without accidentally torching the top. Then you have twin-tube setups. Think of these as a way to double your heat in the same amount of space. They’re great when you need a ton of power but you’re stuck with a limited footprint or can’t just crank up the voltage.
The trade-offs (because there’s always a catch)
Medium-wave lamps use a tungsten filament in a quartz tube. They’re reliable, but they take a minute to actually get up to speed. Shortwave, on the other hand, hits full power almost the second you flip the switch. Now, twin-tubes give you way more watts per square inch, but they make the wiring a bit of a headache. You’ve got more connections to manage, and you have to make sure your power supply can handle the draw without tripping your breakers every ten minutes. Plus, if the wiring is sloppy, you’ll end up with hot spots and cold spots across your metal sheets. Not ideal.
Which one actually fits your job?
If you’re working with thin powder coatings on aluminum, shortwave is your best friend. It dries the surface in a flash. But if you’re dealing with heavy-duty industrial primers on steel, stick with medium-wave. It stops “skinning”—that annoying thing where the surface dries too fast and traps wet solvents underneath. For the high-volume shops, twin-tube arrays are the way to go. They let you keep your oven short without sacrificing your cure rate. Just a word of advice: check your cooling fans. These things put off a massive amount of ambient heat, and if your airflow is weak, you’ll end up burning out your reflectors.
