Curing powder coatings on alloy wheels is a bit of a balancing act. You’ve got a tiny window of temperature to hit. If you’re off by just a bit, you end up with that annoying “orange peel” texture or, even worse, spots that aren’t cured at all. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps because they punch through the metal fast. But here’s the thing: the lamp itself isn’t the hard part. The real headache is figuring out exactly where to put them in the tunnel.
Stop Guessing With Digital Twins
We’re done with the “guess and check” method. Instead, we use digital twin simulations. Basically, we map out the wheel’s shape and how the air moves through the oven before a single piece of equipment is even installed. It lets us see the heat flux and surface temps in a virtual world first. You can spot exactly where the cold spots are hiding—usually on the rim or tucked away in the spokes. We just tweak the lamp angles and zones in the software until the heat is dead-on across the whole wheel.
Dealing With Weird Shapes
Alloy wheels aren’t flat, so a flat line of lamps just doesn’t cut it. You get uneven heat. We design the layout based on the actual footprint of the wheel. By mapping out the radiation paths, we can nail down the exact wattage and distance needed. This means the center hub gets fully cured, but you aren’t accidentally scorching the edges. Now, high-wattage IR tubes put out a massive amount of heat. It makes the cycle time incredibly fast. Just a heads-up: make sure your tunnel ventilation can actually handle that heat buildup, or your thermal sensors are going to start tripping left and right.
